The rain beat down around her, blood streamed down her arms and face as she sank to her knees. Wynn glared at her opponent through the haze of blood; grimacing as he smiled and began to advance.
"It's over" was all he said before turning his attention to the woman behind her "Come, your guardian has failed you. You are mine."
Loathing rage through Wynn. Loathing for this man who was going to take away her love. Loathing for herself for being unable to protect her. She wanted to scream in defiance, to rail against fate and reality. But she could hardly find the strength to stand; and even were she to find such reserves he would simply knock her back to her knees. Despair threatened to overwhelm Wynn, and as it closed over her she realized her answer. She allowed herself to sink into her own mind. She dove further and further into herself, going deeper than she had allowed herself in years. At last she reached it. It tore against its chains as she approached, chains she had forged from blood and tears over thousands of battles. Finally she had sealed it here, within herself, but still she could feel its rage and hatred as it battled tirelessly against its bonds.
Wynn reached out and grasped the creatures head, forcing it to meet her eyes. Pools of darkness met her gaze, in them she saw reflected all she hated about herself, her worst fears and nightmares joined together into her own personal hell. But there was something else mirrored in those unseeing orbs, savage strength. As the chains fell away Wynn had a moment to smile as she imagined what was about to happen to her opponent, then she had only time to scream.
He watched the fallen girl with contempt as he strode forward. She had been little challenge. Always these upstarts felt that passion could win against true skill, that somehow being able to stand up again after being thrown down would eventually allow them to win. He sighed in disgust, they never seemed to learn that he would simply throw them down again, and again, until they could no longer stand. He briefly thought of finishing the girl, but decided against it. He felt no need to waste anymore time. He'd nearly reached his target, the one the girl had been protecting, when he was struck by wave of energy that flung him back several steps and nearly knocked him down. Grimacing he realized that the girl had stood again and he'd need to waste more time teaching her her place.
She had watched Wynn go down the final time, her heart ached as she realized that Wynn was too battered to stand again. She watched as her doom approached, yet her sorrow was not for herself; she cried because of what she'd been forced to watch happen to Wynn. And then Wynn stood between them again. "Stop it Wynn, its over. You dont have to do this anymore." She cried, she couldnt bear to watch again as her love was beaten into the ground. Wynn turned to her for a moment, their eyes met and she saw tears streaming down Wynn's face. "I will save you." Wynn said matter of factly, but she could swear that she heard a second voice whisper "but who will save me?"
Energy coursed through Wynn, reality seemed to bend around her and for an instance she was lost from sight. The being that returned was no longer the Wynn either observer had known. A twisted parody of the girl stood before them now, hate and despair poured from her in such quantities that it warped the air about her. Her eyes had become completely black, fangs jutted from her once pretty mouth, and her left hand had become a twisted claw. Huge leathery wings beat slowly from her back, and a snake like tail twitched behind her in anticipation.

The battle had been intense, but there had been little doubt of its outcome. The creature Wynn had called was relentless. It felt no pain or fatigue, no wound slowed it and its strength was unreal. It stood now in the remains of its opponent and turned slowly to look at her. New hatred sprang into its eyes and it began to advance. It was then that the beast noticed once chain still held. A small golden chain, newly forged, still bound it to its once captor. Realizing its peril the beast sprang forward, intending to kill the girl, the love this chain represented, before it could be denied its freedom once more. But already it was too late, the chain snapped taut and ripped the beast into the abyss which had so recently consumed Wynn.
Wynn, or whatever being was now using her body, fell to its knees before her. Wynn's body shimmered and slowly the features that had marred her friends appearance melted away as if they had never been. The only thing that remained as a reminder of what had been were her empty, unseeing eyes.
Desperately she leaped to catch Wynn before she fell; she wept freely as she lowered her grievously injured friend to the ground. "Wake up Wynn, please wake up!" She sobbed. She had no idea what had happened to her love, but some instinct told her that Wynn was in more danger now than she had ever been.
"She is lost to you, even as she is lost to herself." The voice that came from Wynn was not that of her friend, it was quiet and emotionless.
"Who are you? What are you?" She demanded.
"I am the remnant. It is left to me to watch as we fade from this world, to mark our passing and to cry for the mistress, as she can no longer cry for herself."
"FADE!? Wynn's dying? What the hell is going on?! Give me back Wynn!" She clutched at Wynn's body, desperately pulling it to her as if she could restore her friends shattered mind through sheer physical strength.
"Long had the mistress fought the darkness that lived within herself. She was determined and though she fought alone in the end she overcame. She was not unharmed, the battle left her mind shattered. She had traded despair for madness. Two emerged where there had been only one. The mistress, whom you know as Wynn, and the beast. The beast was the strength that had sustained her through the darkness, it had been warped and its hatred was beyond control. Again the mistress went to war with herself, this time binding the beast into the recess's of her mind."
"So she won. She's ok, why are you telling me that she's dying? And what does that make you? Come on Wynn, just come back. Please." Shock warred with despair in her voice, she had known her love carried scars from her past but to hear this...
"The beast was strength, strength she needed to protect you. She has unbound the beast and allowed it to throw her into the darkness they once conquered. Though she managed to drag it with her, it does not change the fact that she is being consumed and no longer has the strength to free herself."
"Let me talk to her, she can atleast hear me can't she?"
"...We can relay your words to the mistress, but promise nothing else."

Wynn slowly drifted awake, the pleasant sensations of her sleep left slowly. But as they left wakefulness and memory returned, memory of last night and what had happened. She shuddered involuntarily and arms she had yet to notice tightened around her. She opened her eyes and saw the face she would never forget watching her lovingly. "You brought me back" was all she had voice to say.
There was no need for a response.
